A glimpse of the Diamond – 2 Days / 1 Night

One can easily stay in the area of the Diamond Circle for a year, or more, without getting to know all the marvels it contains, without entirely enjoying all its soul. Spending not even a couple of full days here is a sort of a crime.  If you are one of these people shame on you, but never mind after all. Your brief visit will definitely give you the boost to come back soon, and to stay longer.

ITINERARY A – coming from the East

Day 1: Travel from your previous destination to the Diamond Circle along the Ring Road. The first stop is at Dettifoss for a rumbling, epic welcome, then it’s the turn of Vesturdalur valley with the “Whispering Cliffs” at Hljóðaklettar. Ásbyrgi canyon is the perfect spot to say goodbye to the amazing Jökulsárgljúfur. Get to Húsavík in time to catch a whale-watching boat and to enjoy at least some of the attractions the town has to offer: from excellent museums to beautiful trekking trails, from relaxing corners (the swimming pool, the hot-pots, the gardens) to a vibrating nightlife. Overnight in Húsavík.

Highlights of the day:
Dettifoss
– Vesturdalur valley
– Hljóðaklettar
– Ásbyrgi canyon
Húsavík

Day 2: From Húsavík drive towards Mývatn. On the way, among all the unmissable places that are all over the area of the lake, choose carefully: which ones you must keep out, few hours are not enough for everything. Will that be the otherworldly Krafla or the ethereal Jarðböðin Nature Baths? The steamy Hverir or the rocky Dimmuborgir? The charming Grótagjá or the gloomy Hverfell? Heading West stop at Goðafoss. We’ll be looking for you to come back already. And, surely, so you will.

Highlights of the day:
- Lake Mývatn
Hverfell
Grjótagjá and Stóragjá
Dimmuborgir
Jarðböðin
Hverir
Krafla
Goðafoss

ITINERARY B – coming from the West or from the Highlands

Day 1: Travelling from your previous destination along the Ring Road or through Spengisandur Route, Goðafoss is the elegant gateway to the Diamond Circle. Next stop is lake Mývatn, where you spend the rest of the day exploring its astonishing corners. As for Itinerary A, not everything can be done and an accurate choice is needed. Overnight in Mývatn area.

Highlights of the day:
- Goðafoss
Lake Mývatn
Hverfell
Grjótagjá and Stóragjá
Dimmuborgir
Jarðböðin
Hverir
Krafla

Day 2: From Mývatn drive North and reach Húsavík. The whale-watching is a must to do but don’t forget the rest. Linger here until the early afternoon before heading to the eastern section of the circle. Ásbyrgi, Vesturdalur and Dettifoss are the last spots of your Diamond. Now that you understand time flew, you’re regretting your tight schedule and what you had to keep out from the visit. You can settle this only coming back, so know that you’ll always be welcome with open arms.

Highlights of the day:
- Húsavík
– Ásbyrgi canyon
– Vesturdalur valley
– Hljóðaklettar
Dettifoss
