A horseback riding tour surely is an unforgettable experience in Iceland. The Icelandic horse is a truly unique breed of horse and many features make these animals admired by horse lovers from all over the world.
The Icelandic horses are small, almost pony-sized, but extremely hardy and sturdy, able to cross the roughest terrains and to withstand the harsh Icelandic weather thanks to their heavy coat. At the same time, though, they are elegant in the movements and beautiful in the look with their long manes often in the wind and their self-confident and graceful bearing.
The main peculiarity of these horses is their five gaits. Together with the three typical gaits – the walk, the trot and the gallop – the Icelandic horse is able to perform two more gaits: the tölt (a smooth gait, speciality of this breed) and the flying pace (gait for racing).
Saltvík - with the main base only few kilometers out of Húsavík, they offer riding tours in the area of lake Mývatn and longer tours in other areas of the Diamond Circle and on the highlands as well.
Safarí Hestar – located on the southern shores of lake Mývatn, they offer tours among the pseudo-craters of Skutustaðagígar and the surrounding lava fields.
